DON'T BREATHE

DON'T BREATHE 6.0/10 - C

This film was ok. Nothing special. I'm beginning to find out that when most people talk about horror, as long as they were scared, all else is forgiven.

I'm not most people.

There was a story here, I just wasn't that into it. The only character I found myself liking and identifying with was Alex. I tried to like Rocky too, but the convenience of the Blind Man being so unlikable that it makes everyone else seem saintly, didn't work for me. Matter of fact, the script reeked of revisions that stank heavily of convenience plotting. The film sets itself up as if it were going to give you a choice on who to root for, and then gives you no choice but to root for the robbers. I can't help but wonder if originally the blind man was simply a grief driven Vietnam soldier and if rewrite after rewrite he slowly developed into the sadistic creep that he became.

I was annoyed enough with Stephen Lang's sorry excuse at a Dick Durock impersonation as it was, but his "let me explain this outright because in a script that tries so heavily to show and not tell, this must be told because the script isn't good enough to show it" moment had me tugging at my hair, having to resist the urge to pull it out.

I did like the usage of sound, and the one thing that I will praise this film on was how well it nailed suspense. It gave you long enough to absorb the action and take it in, but not so long as to where you lost focus. It had just the right amount. The visuals in this movie were also fairly good and they helped to set the tone.

Performances again were average. I didn't mistake anyone here for Laurence Olivier, but I didn't mistake anyone for Eric Freeman either.
