HUSH - 6.5/10
With so many modern day horror films trying to be clever, unique and consistently trying to fool you, the simplicity and straight forwardness of this film really threw me off. What you see is what you get in this unadorned cat and mouse structured story.
That doesn't mean that it wasn't captivating. It was interesting and the film had a great sense of urgency throughout. Yet, I also feel that the characters of the film could have used a bit more development. It was simply victim Vs Killer, with neither having much of a backstory. Had the film wanted me to care more for the protagonist, it would have had to have given me more to care about.
The film also felt underdeveloped in its subplot. Elements of the story were introduced too late into the film and given way too little screen time for them to add much substance to the story. While the initial concept of the story's subplot was quite interesting, the execution failed to deliver.
I also have to say that while I admire the film for taking risks, some of those risks did not pay off. At least, not for me. The masked killer gave the film an edge of mystery, mystique and suspense. Once he removed the mask and revealed his face, those qualities vanished.
I also have to say that the lighting on the film made it a bit difficult to enjoy. I understand that the film wanted to give off that it was dark and difficult to see, thus adding to the horror of the events unfolding on the screen. BUT, I also want to be able to see what is happening as I watch it.
As negative as I seem to be, I've most certainly seen a lot worse. I mean that not only as far as horror is concerned but movies in general. I also recently watched DADDY'S HOME and that movie was so campy and full of cheap laughs, I didn't even feel like writing a review.
