ROBINSON CRUSOE (1997): A
I've been very fortunate lately to have picked good films to watch. I realize that there are literally dozens of versions of this film, and this is the first one I have every seen.
I was expecting a "Cast Away" type film, of a man's survival on an uninhabited island, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was more a story about friendships and relationships.
A lot of great profound scenes in the movie, that I wonder if are in the 18th century written book. The scene where Friday and Crusoe talk about God was very powerful to me, in particularly the scene where Friday says to Crusoe, "(his God's name) I ask to look after dog spirit."
It's comforting and rewarding to know that in a day in age of 2016, where racism still runs rampant amongst ignorant minds and confused hearts that someone way back in the early 1700's knew that we were all one people, who all bled red and he had the courage to illustrate that in this beautiful story.
My next trip to the library will involve picking up a copy of this novel, to see if it is as compelling and captivating as this film was.
My only criticism of the film is that I felt that Pierce Bronson didn't need to further accent his already beautiful English voice.
Which leads me to having to say that when I was younger, I didn't like Bronson, because I viewed him as a rich snobby actor very similar to George Clooney, who could only play such characters. I regret having that view of Bronson, not only because of this film but because of other films where he has shown his versatility as an actor. This in my opinion though, is the best performance I have ever seen him in.
