HEATHERS

HEATHERS

"Heathers" A very absurd film, that takes a deep, inner look into the ugliness of society and how superficial and shallow we can be. I never quite knew whether to take the film as if what was happening on the screen was literal or metaphorical. Back in 1988 (the year the film was made) not every damn movie was a psychological thriller. The idea that it was all in Veronica's (Winona Ryder's) h
ead isn't even a theory man would have considered back then, but considering how business as usual and casual many serious situations were treated, it begs the question. Was J.D. (Christian Slater) even a real person to begin with, or was he simply an extension of Veronica's psyche that wanted so desperately to put the emotionless of popularity in its place? I don't know. Considering the ending was way over the top and that a blacked, bloodied and bruised Veronica walked the hallways as everyone else seemed unscathed by a huge explosion outside, I'm taking it as metaphorical over literal.

Over all I give this film a 7/10, and my only real gripe with the film is that I feel that there should have been more of a transformation for the Veronica character. I blame that more on the writing, than I do the directing or Winona Ryder's performance. I think the inner reflectiveness that she experiences throughout the film could have been more transformational.

Overall good movie though. A film many would watch at 15-19 and then watch again 10 years later, and identify with in a completely different way.
