JACK THE BEAR: C+
It was a likable enough film through its performances, especially that of Danny DeVito's but I'm not sure what this film was trying to be. It had no clear narrative. The plot had no absolutely no solid direction. It was like being in the middle of Iowa, with the idea in mind to travel out of state. At first you decide to go to Minnesota so you start heading north but then you stop in the middle of your travel, because Missouri sounds more exciting to you and you start heading south. Yet on the way to Missouri, you change course and start heading east to Illinois, only to find yourself turning around and heading west to Nebraska. By the time you've ran out of gas, you find yourself having gone absolutely nowhere, and still stuck in Iowa.
That is exactly what this film did. It went nowhere. It survived solely on good performances, that helped to make up for a weak story.
It's one thing to have a solid story and not focus on it enough by overbearing it with subplots, but this movie didn't even do that. It was more like a collection of rabbit trails with no destinations.
It was fun to see Miko Hughes in something other than Kindergarten Cop where I wasn't deathly afraid of him (i.e. Pet Semetary) and I've never seen Reese Witherspoon that young.
